Makeup Sponge or Makeup Brush?

Tuesday, 28 March 2017

For the past month or so I've been "going back to basics" and using brushes to apply my foundation rather than a makeup sponge. I say back to basics but when I first started wearing makeup the only tools I had to apply it were my hands. Ahhh those were the days....not. Nowadays you've got the silisponge, fingerblender, oval brushes and so many other ways to apply makeup (some people have literally used condoms).
My skin has been playing up recently so I've been using my Real Techniques expert face brush as I find it gives more coverage than the sponge. Thus, (isn't that a great word?) I thought I'd do pros and cons for both and compare how well they work.

Pros:
  • Really good coverage
  • No cakey finish
  • Bristles don't fall out easily
  • Spreads foundation evenly
Cons:
  • Takes a little longer to blend out brush streaks
  • Not easy to wash as foundation builds up deep into the brush

Pros:
  • Pointed and flat surfaces for different areas of the face like under the eyes and around the nose.
  • Creates a smooth base with no streaks
  • Takes less time to blend foundation
Cons:
  • Soaks up a lot of the product
  • Not great coverage so end up using more foundation than usual
  • Gets flimsy/limp the more I wash it
Overall I think they're really good applicators for foundation. If I'm looking for higher coverage I'd use the brush but if I'm in a rush and don't want to spend too long on my makeup I'd use the sponge.

How do you apply your foundation?
