Chapter 18

Sunday, 1 April 2018

This is it. Adulthood is officially upon me. Time to "pull my socks up" and get my shit together because I Olivia Elizabeth Slack am an adult. I might still feel (and often act) like a 12 year old but since Thursday, I am officially in the adult gang. You're not really obliged to properly "adult" until like 25 though right? I mean, that's what I'm telling myself anyway. I refuse to adult yet. Before I ramble on about my birthday I'll warn you that this is a very photo heavy post, I took hundreds of photos but they're so nice to keep.

My 18th birthday was such an incredible day. I'm never really bothered about birthdays to be honest because I can't stand that the spotlight is on you for the whole day. And when it comes to everyone singing happy birthday, I just want the ground to swallow me up. I felt the pressure to do something big and over the top for my 18th so started stressing over it a bit but you've just got to do what you want to do.

In the morning I woke up to the most beautiful rose gold "Happy Birthday" and "18" balloons. They're one of the best parts about a birthday and make for some cute photos. I opened all my cards and presents and I was so lucky to get what I did. My sister actually named a star after me which was insane (I love anything space related) and I got A LOT of booze. After getting ready, me, my sister and my brother went down to Mumbles for a birthday brekkie in the Croeso Lounge which was DELICIOUS. The hashbrowns are on another level and the raspberry lemonade makes you crave summer. If you're ever in Swansea I urge you to visit there. The interior is so cool and the walls are covered in quirky framed art. We managed to get a window seat which had the huge windows looking out to the beach and the pier. After that we went for a little mooch around in some shops then I went and had my nails done. I am so obsessed with my fresh nude and glitter almond nails, they make me feel so sophisticated for some reason. I never want them to go!!

We then went to visit my nan and grandad (aka my favourite people in the world) where nan had a cake, balloons, and most importantly, mini colin the caterpillars waiting for me. My auntie was also there and gave me that amazing card that says "queen of the fucking universe". I can always rely on her for the best birthday cards. We cracked open the champs and properly celebrated and I feel so lucky that they were all apart of the day. After singing happy birthday (wishing the ground would swallow me up) and taking endless amounts of photos, we went back home to pick up my other birthday cake that my wonderful boss made me. I was so in love with my oreo cake. She's such an amazing person and so generous to find the time to make it for me (and manage to keep it a secret). Another family trip and happy birthday song later, we were back home taking more photos and getting ready for a family evening meal out.

We decided to go to Gallinis which is an incredible Italian restaurant in the SA1 Marina, my favourite place in Swansea. After a drink in the pub across the bridge we eagerly headed for our authentic Italian meal. I'm obsessed with anything Italy. The place, the food and the music made me feel like I was really in Italy sipping prosecco and eating bruschetta. For the first 45 minutes or so, the whole restaurant was empty so it felt like it had been hired out exclusively for us. That made it feel extra special. Most importantly, we were seated by the radiator (might be march but it's freezing out) by the window that overlooked the marina and the sunset. What a picture perfect moment. I don't usually like steak and never eat it but my mum and dad have been raving about how good it is for months so I decided to just go for it. I've never eaten meat that's so tender and I literally don't understand how they did it but it genuinely cut like butter. You didn't need to use any force to cut it at all. Mental. I couldn't leave an Italian restaurant without having my all time fave dessert, a homemade tiramisu. It was to die for. After a lovely night with my favourite people I went home (rather drunk) and attempted to fake tan at 11pm for the weekend's nights out. Bad idea. Don't do it.

And that was pretty much it. No crazy 18th birthday party or wild night but I absolutely loved it. All of my birthday messages and gifts were so lovely and I feel so grateful and lucky. Here's to 18....
