Why I Won't Reply To Guest Post Requests

Wednesday, 16 May 2018

Since starting this blog I get a lot of emails. Emails from Indian men telling me they can work miracles with SEO. Emails basically asking me to promote products and work for free. And most annoyingly, emails about guest posts. It's becoming a daily occurrence to open up my email and see a whole host of people asking me to publish their work on my blog. Of course this type of thing isn't alien but I've recently stopped replying to any form of guest post related correspondence. In the beginning I'd reply to every single one trying to let them down gently by politely declining their offer of featuring their work on my website for £10 but I slowly started to lose the will to live.

You've never actually read my blog
The classic opener of "Hi LivWrites, I hope you're having a great week. I really love your blog and......." That's the point where I completely switch off. Firstly, I have a name. Secondly, let's be honest with each other because you've probably never read a post of mine EVER. Which is fine, you don't have to, but what's the point in pretending?

They're annoying to read on other blogs
I read a lot of blogs and when I find a blogger who I like, I really commit. I'll read every new post and really invest my time into them. So it's annoying to see someone who usually writes weekly makeup and beauty reviews randomly throw up a post about something completely unrelated. Like a parenting related post when they have no children or a post about tinder tips when they definitely don't use the app. I don't get it. Of course I can see the other side of letting creative people put their talents out there but at least make it fit with your content and not make it seem like you'll just bash out posts about absolutely anything in exchange for money.

This is my personal blog
I don't blog about how to find the love of your life on tinder or the best techniques for dealing with toddlers. I blog about things I love and my travel adventures and just generally to show my photos. So I feel like it would be wrong for me to just accept any old post from a randomer who doesn't write like me just for a bit of moolah. There's no personal touch and they usually have no relevance to my life; which is what this blog is about.

You've asked me to lie
I don't know about anyone else but the majority of guest post requests I receive ask me not to disclose to readers that it's written by someone else. Majorly shady. They claim it "devalues the content" if I admit it's a guest post and ask me to pretend that it's my work. As someone who values trust immensely, this instantly makes me delete an email. I just don't understand why they think it's alright to ask people to lie to the people reading. I think a blogger should always disclose ads, affiliate links and guest posts. It just seems dishonest otherwise. Maybe that's just me though, I know a lot of people who don't.

I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions on guest posts? Lemme know.
